Gilbert Leonard was born in Mount Desert, Hancock County, Maine, in 1859. According to the 1880 Federal Census, he served at Fort Douglas, Salt Lake, Utah, then at age 21. The 1900 Federal Census records him as living in New York City (Manhattan) where he worked as a "motorman". His family is listed as wife Mary Leonard (b. Alaska), a daughter Mary and a son, Gilbert. By 1910, there are four more Leonard children: Howard, Helen, Willie, and Frances, all born in New York City.

His various U.S. Army enlistments confirm his birth in Mount Desert, Maine, and describe him as 5'8" in height, with gray eyes, dark hair and ruddy complexion.

Records of the National Homes for Disable Volunteers (VA Medical Center, Dayton, Ohio) describe his military service, including action in the Spanish American War. Other details about his arrival at the veterans' home are his arrival on June 26, 1925, coming from his home in Daytona Beach, Florida, listing his wife at the time as Emma Leonard of Daytona Beach, Fla. VA Medical Center records indicate he died on October 7, 1926, and was buried the same day in the Dayton National Cemetery, Section 3, Row 7, Site 12.
