R/B Radio Personality. Known to many as "Jocko", he was a legendery Philadelphia disc jockey and one of the pioneers of rock & roll radio. Born Douglas Henderson in Baltimore, Maryland. He started broadcasting on Baltimore's WSID in 1952. He accepted an offer from WHAT in Philadelphia in 1953, he took on the name "Jocko" and started rhyming everything he said. He later moved to Philadelphia's WDAS where he remained until the sixties, he shared the airwave with other great deejays: Georgie Woods, Jimmy Bishop and Butterball. He emceed rock and roll shows at the world famous Apollo Theater in New York and the Uptown Theater in Philadelphia. During his tenure in Philadelphia, he coined the phrase "Eee-tiddly-ock. This is the jock". His Rocketship broadcast could be heard in New York, Detroit, Washington, D.C., Richmond, Va., Miami, Boston, St. Louis and Baltimore. In 1993, The Philadelphia Music Alliance's Walk of Fame on South Broad Street honored him with a brass plaque. On July 15, 2000, Jocko Henderson died in Philadelphia of cancer and diabetes.
