Prentice first applied for a passport in 1917 to move to Peking, China, to work at the Hopkins Memorial Hospital along with his wife.

Five years later he returned to Norwich, Connecticut and the next year in 1923 he applied for a new passport to return to China with his wife and three children who had been born there. In June 1926 Mrs Prentice took her children to Los Angeles and did not return to China.

Prentice never returned to the United States not even during WWII. He was imprisoned by the Japanese along with other foreigners from countries at war with Japan. He was in Weishein and was the camp dentist.

After his release he went back to his home on Legation Street and his private dental practice.

He was implicated in a horrific murder of a young girl
Read Midnight in Peking by Paul French for details. However, due to the unsettled times, the fall of China to the Japanese, and alledged bungling the case is unsolved.

Died at 3 Legation Street of a coronary thrombosis. Buried in plot 229 of the British Cemetery.
