Bessie grew up in Adair, Clark, and Buchanan Counties of Missouri where her father practiced Osteopathic medicine. After completing school, Bessie taught school in various towns in both Kansas and Oklahoma.
Bessie and her parents were living in Sumner County, Kansas when she met and married Charles H. Gibson in about 1910. They had one son, Charles H. Gibson, Jr. who was born in 1915. In 1920, Mr. Gibson died. Bessie remarried in about 1921 to Victor Paul Raymond of Stanberry, Gentry County, Missouri, whom she had met while visiting relatives in that area. Mr. Raymond was an interior and exterior decorator. They continued to live in Gentry County.
Bessie and Victor Raymond had one daughter, Virginia, born in 1923. A few days later, Bessie died of uremic poisoning and Eclampsia.
Bessie's son by her first husband, Charles Gibson, Jr., was then raised by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Merritt Beets. However, sadly, Charles Gibson, Jr. died in 1931 at the age of only 16 years & 8 months. Virginia (who was also called Polly) lived for a time with her father Victor and his mother who was living with them in the 1920 census of Gentry County. In the 1930 census, Virginia Polly was living in a girl's home in Chillicothe, Mo. In February 2016, she was still alive, according to her granddaughter who contacted this writer through Ancestry.com.
- Written by Blytha (Dennis) Ellis. My husband is a distant cousin to Bessie through her father.
Note: On June 23, 2012, a Find A Grave volunteer reported that the Cemetery Office confirmed that this burial is unmarked. Also, the Gentry County Library Genealogy web page has records of High Ridge Cemetery prepared by Don Raymond, and according to his records, Bessie Raymond's grave is unmarked.
