Samuel was the son of Robert Stewart and Mary M. Allen.

He was married first in Sep. 1831 in possibly Marion County, Tennessee to Sarah Hawkins. They had eight children; Lucinda, Mary Ann, Robert H., Benjamin G., Delilah Jane, Susannah "Susan" Tribble, Margaret, and James K. Polk Stewart.

After Sarah's death, Samuel married Permelia (Matheny) Williams, widow of Powell Williams. They had five sons; Jasper Newton, Columbus who died young, Minos R., Kingsbury B., and Samuel DeWorld Stewart.

OLIVE GILBERT STEWART'S RESEARCH
..November 31, 1858 - Marries Permelia Stewart ( KING, James R. to Permela Stewart 11/31/1858, DeKalb County Marriage Records)
..August 14, 1859 - Lilburn Henderson King born - Lilburn H. King, my father's half brother, was the only child of the marriage of James R. King and Permelia (Matheny)(Williams)(Stewart) King. Since he is listed in 1860 as one year of age, the marriage of his parents must have occurred not later than 1858. Since Permelia's husband, Samuel Stewart, Sr., died in the late spring of 1855 and her youngest son was born October 1, 1855, the second marriage necessarily occurred later than that date, somewhere between 1856 and 1858.
..1860 Census - The 1860 census shows him married to Permelia (Matheny). Permelia had been married twice previously, first to a Mr. Williams, by whom she had two sons, Patrick and Parley. By 1860, these boys were not living at home. Her second marriage was to my grandfather, Samuel Stewart, and the four Stewart boys listed in the household are my father's full brothers and my father, Samuel Stewart.
..I do not have the exact date of the marriage of James R. King and Permelia, but since the child they had together - Lilburn Henderson King, was born August 14, 1859 we can assume that it was not later than, say, 1858, and could have been as early as 1856, since Permelia's second husband, my grandfather, died in May 1855.
..The family census (shown below) includes the Stewart boys, sons of Samuel Stewart and Permelia (Matheny)(Williams), and their half-brother, Lilburn H. King.
..My father, Samuel DeWorld Stewart, shown in this 1860 census as six years old, was born on October 1, 1855. I have often heard him say that he was a post-humous child, as his father had died five months before he was born. This would put the date of death of Samuel Stewart, Sr., circa April-May of 1855.
..In the 1850 census of the family of Samuel Stewart and Permelia (Matheny) the only Stewart child listed was Jasper, shown in that census as being two years old and in this 1860 census as 12. The other three boys listed above, Minos, Kingsbury and Samuel, appear for the first time in this 1860 census. It is known in the family that there was another Stewart brother, named Columbus. Since he does not appear in either the 1850 or 1860 census, it is apparent that he was born after the first census and died before the latter census. The legend is that he died in childhood, and the census bears this out. His birth date is not known. Jasper N. Stewart was born May 18, 1848; Minos R. Stewart was born January 4, 1852; Kingsbury Stewart's birth date not known;
Samuel W. Stewart was born October 1, 1855.
