ODESSA Jack Thomas Burge, 88, of Odessa precious beloved husband, daddy & grandfather went home to be with the Lord Thursday, June 7, 2012 at the Hospice House.

He was born February 4, 1924 in Mankins, TX. He was a welder.

Just before he took a turn for the worse his beloved grandson, Jesse, called and asked him a question, "Grandpa, once a Marine?" and he quickly answered, "always a Marine!" He served in the Eastern Theater during WWII and was stationed on Guam and Bougainville while fighting the Japanese war. Coming from a small town Dundee, TX he thought Guam was the prettiest place he had ever seen and talked about it often throughout his life. He never once talked about the bad things of war, only the beauty of the places he saw. He was honorably discharged from the Marines as Corporal in November 1945. After discharge he was employed in the oilfield when he met and married his beloved wife, Pauline Louise Riggs of 65 years after a three day courtship. They have been members of Faith Tabernacle Assembly of God Church in Odessa, TX for 20 years and he has played a guitar in the church band for the past seven years, right up to three weeks before he went home to be with the Lord.

The most important things in his life were God, his wife and family. He loved music, playing a guitar, mandolin, bandolin, and sometimes a banjo nearly every day. He, his family, & a friend volunteered at a local nursing home playing music and singing for the Seniors one day a week for fifteen years until his health started failing.

Fishing was his lifelong love, all vacations were spent on a river bank or lake camped out with his family fishing, seining his own bait, and teaching his children and grandson how to bait a hook and pull in a biggin, as he called them.

He is reunited with his parents, William Thomas & Lucy Emma (Taylor) Burge, son, Jack Thomas Burge Jr., brothers, Johnnie Burge, Jimmie Burge, sisters, Willie Sissom, Velma Johnson, Lou Edmonds, nieces, Sharon Kay Burge Flood, Sabrina Leigh Ann Kimbell, nephew, Ricky Lynn Shilanski and many more family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline L. Burge, daughter, Janice K. Burge, grandsons, Jesse Dean Humphrey & Britt Lee Osterloh, great-grandsons, Preston Thomas Humphrey, Jared Dakota Humphrey, Kade Osterloh, great-granddaughters, Kaliegh & Aylssa Humphrey, sister & brother-in-law, Virginia & Al Shilanski, sister-in-law, Barbara Burge, two nieces he was very close to Kim Burge & Donna Riggs, and numerous nieces & nephews.

Always quick with a smile and kind words he was loved by many.

There will be a family visitation 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, June 10, 2012 at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 11, 2012 at Faith Tabernacle Church with Rev. Curtis Brown officiating. A dinner will follow in the Fellowship Hall.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at the Dundee Cemetery in Dundee, TX with Pastor Clint Sissom officiating.

Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
