Nathaniel Whiting Fay was the son of John and Sarah (called Sally) (Whiting) Fay, was born in Grantham on May 23, 1818. He was a farmer and lived in Nelson, then later in Sullivan where he died on October 4, 1888.

He married Mrs. Mary (Tilton) Powell on November 15, 1849 and who was born in Hampton Falls on December 9, 1810. She was the daughter of Ebenezer and Sarah (Tuck) Tilton. She had been married previously to Joseph Powell, who was born in Yulee, Gloucestershire, England, and immigrated to Lowell, Massachusetts. He died in Lowell on October 24, 1844. The couple had two daughters: Harriet, who died in Lowell at the age of seventeen months, and Caroline, born in Lowell in 2835.

Nathaniel became the step-father of Caroline Ophelia Powell. The family came to Sullivan (that part which is now Nelson) about 1865 where Nathaniel succeeded the Blacks on the old Rueben Morse farm. Sadly, the couple had no children of their own.

Upon the death of Nathaniel and Mary, his wife, the family farm was deeded to Samuel Edmund Jenkins, the firstborn of Caroline and the couple's grandson.
