Belt Pioneer to Be Buried on Tuesday; Mrs. R. H. Bemis Came to Valley in 1895; Husband Newspaper Man
Belt--Feb. 12--The funeral of Mrs. R. H. Bemis, wife of the Belt postmaster, who died Monday evening at her home here of dropsy, will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2. The funeral will be held at the home and services will be read by Rev. L. H. Young of the Episcopal church, Great Falls. The ritual of the Eastern Star lodge of Belt will be read at the house rather than the grave because of the weather.
Mrs. Bemis, formerly Lizzie W. White, was born at Waterman, Ill., and came to White Sulphur Springs when ten years old. She taught school near the town and later moved to Neihart, where she became assistant cashier in a bank and married Mr. Bemis, who was in newspaper work.
Mr. and Mrs. Bemis can to Belt in 1895, when he and E. Sheridan bought interests in the Belt Valley Times.
Surviving Mrs. Bemis are Mr. Bemis; a daughter, Mrs. Owen Holt of Great Falls; a son, John A. Bemis, a lieutenant in the marines; a grandson, Ralph Jaap, who has lived with the Bemis family since the death of his mother; another daughter, Mrs. John Jaap; a sister, Mrs. Edna Sawyer, Elko, Nev.; and her mother, Mrs. Mary White of Belt.
