Lawrence Elbert Apple, 89, Rock Island, died Friday, June 10, 1998, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Mr. Apple was born March 16, 1909, in Indianapolis, Indiana, the son of Harry Daniel and Bessie Cogle Apple. He was educated in rural Indiana and Danville, Illinois schools. Before he finished high school, he removed with his family first to Waterloo, Iowa, and later to Warsaw, Illinois. Mr. Apple received his GED from Carl Sandburg College, Carthage Campus, when he was 81, making an exceptionally high score on the tests.

He married Anna F. Apple September 6, 1936, in Warsaw, Illinois and worked for Container Corporation of America 39 years, retiring in 1974. An amateur rdio operator for over 40 years, Mr. Apple's call was K9HQU. He was a member of Tyrian Lodge No. 508, A.F. and A.M., of Sioux City, Iowa, and a former member of the 6-30 Club and the Container Corporation bowling team. He was an active member of the Church of Peace, Rock Island. In retirement, he enjoyed making clocks as gifts, religious plaques, and small wooden novelties, all of which he gave away. He also worked extensively in calligraphy.

Mr. Apple was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Lowell G., a grandson, Shawn, brothers Floyd, Harold, and Lowell R., and sisters Lucile and Helen L.

A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Mr. Apple is survived by his wife Anna (Anne) of 61 years; son Frank M. and wife Patricia of Marion, Iowa; son Ronald L. and wife Jean of Louisville, Kentucky; son Dennis G. and wife Linda of Mission Viejo, California; and daughter Joyce E. Taylor and husband Duane of Warsaw, Illinois; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Ross and Lloyd, both of Keokuk, Iowa.

Memorials may be made to the Church of Peace, Rock Island.

I'd like to add some of my own thoughts about my Uncle Lawrence. He was a man of strong family values. I believe this stems from his efforts to help the family during the great depression. As stated in his obituary, he left school before graduating to assist in supporting his parents and siblings. All reports of family members tell of their meager living. Through all of this, the family stayed together. This experience taught him the importance of family. As a result, he was the quintessential family patriarch.
