History of Henry Co., In 1822-1906
J.W. Dunbar was born in Giles Co., WV May 11, 1832, son of William and Cynthia (DeJournet) Dunbar, the former born in Botetourt Co.,
VA, in 1787, a son of Joseph Dunbar, and the latter being born in Augusta Co., VA abt 1800, a daughter of Richard DeJournet. He was reared in
Virginia and in 1863 came to Indiana and settled in Henry County, working at the carpenters trade. In 1870 he opened the first hotel in Mt. Summit. He married June 28, 1853, to Sarah D., daughter of Charles and Catherine (Howe) Houchins. To them have been born ten children, seven whom are living - Mahala, born August 14, 1854, was married October 17, 1875 to Allen Crandall Spell: Charles W., born October 2, 1856, was married October 17, 1878 to Nellie Carroll; Virginia, born March 3, 1862; Minta,
born April 16, 1868; Bertie, born December 2, 1870; Gertie, born December 21, 1873; Belle, born November 28, 1877. Mr. and Mrs. Dunbar are members of the Christian Church. Politically he is a Democrat. He has held several offices of trust in the township, and at the present is serving as Justice of the Peace. Mt. Summit Christian church, organized by Elder J.B. Ludwig, April 24, 1873 - John Wesley served as Elder, pg. 748. The first hotel was kept by
W.S. Dunbar who is still in the business. (written in 1884, his father would be 97 years old. Hazzard's History of Henry Co., Indiana, pg 43, J.W. Dunbar served as Justice of the Peace, 1883-84, Mt. Summit, Indiana.

J.W. Dunbar, whose decling health has been noted from time to time, died last Sunday, aged 63 years, 7 months, and 24 days. He was born in Giles Co., W.VA. Mr. Dunbar was well known and will be sadly missed. He was a good neighbor and friend, and an earnest worker in the Church, of which he had been a member for several years. He was a postmaster and Justice of the Peace at the time of his death. The latter office he had
faithfully filled for several years. Funeral services were held at the church Tuesday, Rev. Jaynes delivering the address, and was buried in the cemetary east of town. He leaves a widow, six daughters, one brother and one sister, several grandchildren, and many friends to mourn thier loss. John Wesley was also President of the Mt. Summit Christian Church Building Committee.
