Samuel Heywood Pemberton, 85, of Olympia, Washington, passed away March 17, 2009, following an accident.

Born in Huntsville, March 27, 1923, he was preceded in death by his parents, Olson and Anice Pemberton.

He graduated from Maryville College with a degree in biology and received a masters in hospital administration from Baylor University. He retired from the United States Army as a Lieutenant Colonel, and won many medals and awards in World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam. He was an assistant professor of hospital administration for Baylor University at Fort Sam Houston; and worked for the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Hospitals. He was a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives; a member of Westminister Presbyterian Church; and was active in the Masonic Lodge and was a 32nd degree Maston. His hobbies included collecting Big Little Books and mementos from traveling throughout Asia and Europe. He was dedicated to his family and was a loyal friend and counselor.

He is survived by his wife, Laura Lisette Gessert Pemberton; son, Samuel Heywood Pemberton, Jr. and wife, Karen, of Burton, Texas; daughter, Susan Lynn Pemberton of Olympia, Wash.; two grandchildren, one brother, Olson Pemberton, Jr.; and many other relatives.
