Beda Elisabet Skarin was born January 10, 1875 in Vallen, Sweden to :
CARL ANDERSSON SKARIN
BRITA CAROLINA SKARIN (nee Grundstrom)

Her father Carl Skarin was a Sail Maker in Goteborg, Sweden.

GOTTFRED GRUNDSTROM married BEDA ELISABET SKARIN in GRUNSUNDA, SWEDEN IN 1905. They had their first child William Carl Grundström; May 6, 1906 in Sweden:
Parish of Grunsunda, Vasternorrland Lan in the Kingdom of Sweden. The couple decided to move to North America.

They began their travels on 28 September 1906 from Goteborg, Sweden to Hull, England. The couple then traveled on 02 October 1906 from Liverpool, England across the Atlantic Ocean aboard the S.S. SAXONIA along with their 5-month-old son Birger William Carl Grundström, also known as 'Bill'. It must have been a long journey, and the young family traveled in 'Steerage', which could not have been an easy voyage. They arrived at the Port of Boston, Massachusetts on October 11, 1906.

Later, the family boarded a train across North America. They settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada where they had 3 more children: Signe Elizabeth, Elsa Amerencia, and Fred Bertyl (1924-1925) who died as an infant.

When they arrived in Boston, the spelling of their name may have been shortened to 'Gunström'. The ship Manifest shows their original spelling as Grundström. The Manitoba Vital Statistics Agency lists the children's birth names as Grundström. The spelling on their headstone is simply 'Gunström'.

SIBLINGS:
*Birger WILLIAM Carl Grundström (1906-1988)
*Signe Elizabeth Grundström (1907-1991)
*Elsa Amerencia Grundström (1911-1991)
*Fred Bertyl Grundström (1924-1925)

They lived at 399 Tweed Avenue in Winnipeg in a little wooden house with a wire fence around it. The fence had posts with painted wooden globe-shaped balls on the top. The colours used to paint the house and fence were white with turquoise trim. There was a little metal gate with a latch that the children would love to swing on.

Beda Grundström had a big vegetable garden in their backyard on 399 Tweed Avenue in Winnipeg. Great-Granddaughter Maureen remembers the rich black Canadian soil, healthy potato plants, and garden peas. She would stand there and eat the sweet peas straight off the vine. Beda baked delicious Swedish pastries for the family. A favorite was Tunkaka, or Swedish thin bread. Beda also loved to drink homemade eggnog. Great-Granny was the first in the family who bought the gallon-sized milk cartons ... we didn't know how she could even lift the heavy jugs. We would have a cookie and tea in the kitchen. When she wanted to get her point across, her grandchildren remember her pounding her fist on the kitchen table.

Both Beda and Gottfrid learned to speak, read and write English. When Beda got older, she would call her married daughter Betty on the phone and say, "Betty, I am dying," and then hang up the phone. Betty and her husband Vern would get in the car and race over to check on her. When they got there, she would just tell them she was lonely and wanted to see them! :)

Both BEDA and her husband GOTTFRID are buried in Section 16 of the ELMWOOD CEMETERY in Winnipeg, Manitoba CANADA next to their daughter Signe Grundström Mulberry, and her husband Vernon Mulberry.

Beda died on March 6th, 1966, and she was buried three days later on March 9, 1966 in Elmwood Cemetery. Her husband Gottfrid passed away just six months later. Both are buried next to each other.
