Philip Harnett Corboy
Died peacefully at home in Chicago on June 12, 2012, surrounded by loving family. He was the dearly beloved husband of Mary A. Dempsey; loving father of Philip Harnett, Jr. (Margaret), Dr. John (Alix), Thomas (Shanti), the late Joan (James Epstein) and the late Bobby Corboy; adored grandfather of Matt and Nora Epstein, Lauren, Bobby, David, Kevin, Juliette and Ryan Corboy;

loving brother of Daniel, ret. CPD (Nancy) Corboy and the late Marge (late Lawrence) Kotin; fondest brother in law of Sheila (John) Ryden, William (Rose) Dempsey, Dr. Robert (Diane) Dempsey and Mark Dempsey; dearest uncle of Dan (Jean) Kotin, Karen Corboy, Dr. Daniel (Dr. Jackie) Corboy, Kara, Conor, Emily and Genevieve Dempsey and Jack, Michael and Mark Ryden; and devoted son of the late Harold and the late Marie Corboy.

Phil was a proud graduate of St. Margaret Mary Grade School, St. George High School, and Loyola University Chicago School of Law. As the Senior Partner and Founder of Corboy & Demetrio, P.C., Phil devoted his trial law practice of more than 60 years to representing the rights of the injured and their families with integrity, diligence and respect for the rule of law. He was proud to have mentored and trained generations of trial lawyers.

He is a former President of the Chicago Bar Association, former President of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, former chairman of the Section of Litigation of the American Bar Association; a member of the American Association for Justice, the Inner Circle of Advocates, the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, the American College of Trial Lawyers and founding member of the Center for Disability and Elder Law.

Philip was our beloved husband, father and grandfather, a dedicated advocate and a loyal friend. He cared.

VISITATION: Friday, June 15, 2 pm - 8 pm Philip H. Corboy Law Center of Loyola University Chicago School of Law, Kasbeer Hall 25 E. Pearson Street, Chicago.

MASS OF THE RESURRECTION: Friends are asked to gather Saturday, June 16, at 10 am Holy Name Cathedral, 735 N. State St, Chicago. Interment Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, Illinois.

The National Law Journal listed Corboy as one of the top 100 most influential lawyers in America and one of the nation's top 15 trial lawyers; Chicago Magazine included him in its lists, The Power 100 and Power Lawyers, and called him one of the 30 toughest lawyers in Chicago. Law & Business listed him as one of America's top trial lawyers. He has been in The Best Lawyers in America book since its inception in 1987.

Corboy wrote more than 100 articles on legal and business topics and has been the subject of news and features in many publications and television shows. He has appeared on 20/20, 60 Minutes, Face the Nation, Nightline with Ted Koppel, and the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Corboy was a lecturer and panelist at legal, medical and insurance meetings and conventions around the world and profiles have been written about him by the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Chicago Magazine, and the Chicago Tribune.

In 2010, he and his wife, Mary Dempsey, made the largest single gift ever to the Loyola University Chicago School of Law. In recognition, Loyola renamed its law school building the Philip H. Corboy Law Center. In addition to numerous honors from religious organizations, legal associations and publications, Corboy was awarded an honorary Doctor of Law Degree from the John Marshall Law School and St. Ambrose University.
