Oakland police officer killed when he was hit by a tractor trailer truck that later fled the scene.

Officer Seuis, was on his way home from work and still in his police uniform and motorcycle when the accident occurred at 2:15 p.m. on the I-238 Freeway near Castro Valley. He was thrown from his motorcycle when the truck's trailer struck him and witnesses rushed to assist him, he later died while undergoing surgery for his injuries at Eden Medical Center. Although Seuis was headed home after completing his shift, Oakland traffic officers wear their uniform and are considered on-duty until they arrive home with their motorcycles, officials said.

For the past 6 years, Seuis was a member of the motorcycle drill team and invented a move that bears his name.

Oakland police said he joined the department in 1988. During his career, Seuis was distinguished with several awards, including the Good Conduct Bar, the Advanced P.O.S.T. Bar, and the Outstanding Performance Evaluation Bar. He also received 33 letters of appreciation, commending him on his service to Oakland citizens, according to the Police Department.

Officer Seuis is survived by his wife Michelle and two daughters, Danielle, 13, Kristen, 11 and his parents.

The hit-and-run suspect has been identified as 37-year-old Carlos Mares of Union City. He has been arrested and booked into jail on felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter charges.
