His records at the Battle Mountain Sanitarium at Hot Springs, Fall River Co South Dakota say that he was born in Washington Co Iowa. His 1st census is the 1856 Iowa State Census taken at Union, Des Moines Co, Iowa. He is approximate age of 13 and living in the household of Horatio Walker. His future wife Francis Cartwright is listed with her parents above the Horatio Walker household. On the 1860 census James is still living in the home of Horatio Walker. I believe James Allen Casteel is the son of Calloway Casteel and Mary Minor and not the son of Elcana Casteel and Christina Eslinger. Their son "Allen" disappears from the record after the 1850 census and their they had a son James Madison Casteel. I do not feel that their were to sons named James in the Elcana Casteel family. Calloway Casteel is most likely to be the 1/2 brother of Elcana Casteel from a 2nd marriage of their father. Calloway died around after the 1840 Census that was taken at Washington County, Iowa.

Suggested edit: The death place of James Allen Casteel was either at the Battle Mountain Sanitarium in South Dakota and then brought back to Cedar Co Nebraska for burial. It is not known where his wife was living during his time at the Sanitarium, but in 1910 2 of his 4 sons were living in Cedar Co Nebraska. Fannie moved to Omaha, NE and was living there in 1917 according to the area directory.
