During World War II, he served as a Lieut. Commander in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Savo Island in the Pacific.
He graduated with honors from Episcopal HS in Alexandria, VA in 1929, and Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Princeton in 1933. In 1936 he graduated from Harvard Law School and began practicing law in Jacksonville, FL. In 1960, he joined Atlantic Nat’l Bank as VP. He was President and CEO until 1976 and as Chairman of the Board until 1985 when it merged into First Union National Bank, now known as Wachovia Bank. He was Chairman of the Boards of Directors of the Cummer Museum, the Community Chest - United Fund, and the Children's Home Society, on the Board of Governors of the Jacksonville Area Chamber of Commerce and President of the Group III FL Bankers Assoc. and the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army, on the Board of Directors of the FL Publishing Co. and on the Regional Advisory Committee on Banking Practices and Policies of the 6th National Banking Region. He was on the Vestry and the Executive Board of the Finance Committee and served as Chancellor of the Episcopal Cathedral in Jacksonville.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Helen Murchison Lane, children Edward Wood Lane, III and wife Barney, Palmer Lane Dorn and husband Joe, Anna Taliaferro Lane, and Charles Murchison Lane and wife Deborah, thirteen grandchildren, and nephews, William Bours Bond and wife Sandy, and James Taliaferro Lane, Jr. and wife Carol.
