He graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Maryville University, and St. Louis University School of Law in 1979. Dennis practiced law in Montgomery City, MO since 1984.
Dennis and his wife, Cindy, have shared their lives together for over 35 years. He was a member of the Administration Commission at Montgomery City Immaculate Conception Church, Montgomery United Way, Montgomery County Rotary Club, Montgomery City Chamber of Commerce, Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, Missouri Bar Association, Knights of Columbus, and the Martinsburg Poker Club. He was a past member of Immaculate Conception parish council. He most enjoyed spending time with his wife, Cindy, his family and friends, although playing poker was a close second. He enjoyed reading, skiing and Cardinal baseball.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Cynthia Alvino Schafer; brothers and sisters, Kevin (Linda) Schafer, Geralyn (Bob) Nickles, Noel (Becky) Schafer, Marian Schafer (Randy Ewing), and Karl Schafer; mother-in-law, Dolores Alvino; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Carol (Bill) Handte, Thomas Alvino, Cathy Noel (Peter Hoyer), Carleen (Skip) Lican, Terry (Judy) Alvino, Paul (Jill) Alvino, Christine (Jeffrey) Ryan, Charmaine (Charles) Schoenbeck and Carrie Alvino (Jason Brown).
Surviving are aunts and uncles, Norbert "Norb" (Carol) Wieschhaus, Marie (Benny) Lowry, Sister Verona Schafer, Agnes Schafer, and Paul (Pat) Schafer; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, John Clarence Schafer and Ruth Clare "Toots" Wieschhaus Schafer; brother, Gary Schafer; sister, Marcia Schafer; father-in-law, Pietro Alvino; and brother-in-law, Pete Alvino.
A funeral mass was held at 1 p.m. today at the Montgomery City Immaculate Conception Church. Interment will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, south of Martinsburg, MO. Visitation was held on Sunday from 4-8:30 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church in Montgomery City, MO. A prayer service was held on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. at the church.
