Died in Vernon, Aug 24, '85. William Jerome Decker, aged Forty-five years.

The diseased was born in Plainsville, Ontario Co., N.Y. He came to Michigan in early life and in 1863 was married to Miss Clarisa Lockwood, a daughter of the first settler of the township of fairfield in this county. He came to Vernon township Jan 26, 1865 and for a few years worked on a farm. He then became a peddler and in October 1868 he moved into the village of Vernon and engaged in the mercantile business in a building which stood on or near the present site of Shaw and Holmes' meat market. He then built the store now owned by J. Wallace where he sold goods for some time. While engaged in the mercantile business he began manufacturing and selling on a small scale an eye lotion, a cataract remedy and a kind of pain killer to which he gave the euphonious name of "46". In the process of time the sale of these medicines so increased that he gave up other business and began to act as his own agent, traveling over Mich. and other states at stated intervals, selling and advertising his remedies, and came to be generally known as "doctor".
For the past two years he has complained of a severe soreness in his side and back, which he attributed to a fall from a building. About six months ago this pain began to increase, and at length became so intense as to unsettle his mind and from a form weighing over two hundred pounds he was reduced to a mere skeleton and all medical skill failed to reach his case, in fact we think his symptoms denied a correct diagnosis of his disease. A post mortem examination conducted by Dr. Holtzman revealed the fact that he had hard cancer of the liver and pancreas with infiltration of the lungs, also enlargement of the spleen. The heart, stomach and kidneys were found to be healthy.
HIs funeral was held at M. E. Church on Monday of this week, was largely attended. Services conducted by Rev. C. Simpson. His surviving family consists of a wife and six children.
William and Clarissa had the following children:

Martha Jane [Wygant] (1863-1944),
Edwin William (1866-1936),
Willard George (1869-1940),
Irvin Jerome (1876-1961),
Henry J (died in infancy),
Edith (1879-1895),
Ida May [Randall] (1884-1909)
