When he succeeded his half-brother Eudes he changed his name to Guillaume and is therefor listed as Guillaume VII de Aquitaine or Guillaume V de Poitou. From 1039 until 1044 he remained under the regency of his mother. He and his wife Ermesinde had one daugther who married Pierre I of Savoy. He was succeeded by his younger twin brother Guy.
