Mrs. Lydia Bowling nee Ebright, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Ebright and was born near Pittsburg, Pa., Oct. 23 1826 and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. A. Talbot, Saturday July 8th, aged 89 years, 8 months and 14 days.
Her parents moved to Adams county, Ohio, when she was six years old. In 1844 she was united in marriage to Mr. Joseph Mahaffey. To this union were born eight children, two having died in infancy. Mrs. Sarah Giles, Scandia, Kansas; Mrs. Martha Talbot, Edward and George Mahaffey, Cambridge; Perry C. Mahaffey, Oklahoma; and Thomas Mahaffey, Scandia, Kansas. Mr. Mahaffey died June 20, 1859.
In the fall of 1859 Mrs. Mahaffey with her children, moved to Rock island, Ill. She was united in marriage to Mr. Samuel Bowling and this union was blessed with four children. Clark D. Bowling, Delavan, Kansas; Mrs. Lizzie Space, Campbell, Nebr., Mrs. Nellie Smith, Waukomis, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Lucy Streed, Wheatland, Wyoming. She also leaves forty-six grandchildren and ninety-one great grandchildren.
Grandma Bowling will be missed not only by her children who have so kindly and tenderly cared for her not only during her recent illness and death but in all the years of her declining age Grandma Bowling was so kind and patient, always having a good word for everybody. She certainly lived an exemplary Christian life and her death came as quietly and serene as her life had been. Many an hour has the writer spent in the last three years in company with Grandma. Yes, Grandma is gone, but in memory she still lives.
Short funeral services were held at the home on Monday afternoon, July 10th, and the funeral services at the M.E. church at 2:30 conducted by Rev. D.S. Andrewartha, assisted by Rev. J.F. Robinson of the First Methodist Episcopal church of Geneseo. A quartet consisting of Mrs. George Anderson, Mrs. William Eaton, Clyde B. Taylor and William Eaton, rendered several appropriate selections.
The pallbearers consisted of four grandchildren and two great grandchildren: Mark, Ben and Verne Talbot and Earl Mahaffey, grandchildren, and Embert Mahaffey and Gale Talbot, great grandchildren. The remains were laid to rest in Red Oak cemetery.
