William Howard Hoople was one of the twelve founding members of the Church of the Nazarene. In 1893, Hoople left a prosperous leather business to found the Utica Avenue Pentecostal Tabernacle in Brooklyn, New York. He went on to found several other churches and in 1895 merged with the New England based Central Evangelical Holiness Association to form the Church of the Nazarene in the East. In 1907 Hoople merged his denomination with its western counterpart headed by Dr. Phineas Bresee to create the unified Church of the Nazarene. Devoted to the service of God, Hoople followed the American Expeditionary Force to France in WWI under the auspices of the YMCA. Within a few years of his return, he expired after a seven-week illnes.
