William Clem, a farmer three miles northwest of Atchison who was about as well known in the city as in his own neighborhood, was in town Saturday. He was looking about as usual, but complained some of heart trouble. Between 6 and 7 o'clock he was seen driving west on Main street, in the direction of his home. a colored man was in the buggy with him. He must have stopped on the way, as he was seen as late as midnight on the road home. At 6:30 the next morning he was found dead on the roadside half a mile from his home, by Peter Walters, a neighbor, who was on his way to church, and was soon joined by Tim Finnigan, who was also on his way to church. They notified the neighbors and Dr. C. F. Howe, the coroner, was later summoned. Clem was found lying on his back with his head in a low place in the ground. There was no evidence of violence and the coroner was of the opinion that he had been stricken with heart disease and fallen from the buggy, and that an inquest was unnecessary without further developments demanded it. The horse and buggy were found at Clem's home in the morning. He was 54 years of age and leaves a wife and nine children, the oldest a married daughter living in California. the burial was in Oak Hill cemetery Tuesday.
