He was born Aug. 12, 1919, in Ravenswood, W.Va., a son of the late Bert and Ona (Flinn) Bates. His wife, Bertha (Snyder) Bates; brothers, Ray and Dick; and sisters, Bertha, Carrie, Hazel and Elsie also preceded him in death. And a grandson Robert Bates Jr.
He was a construction worker and a retired custodian from the Jackson County Board of Education. He enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include sons, Robert Bates of Ravenswood and Clyde D. Bates of Sherman; daughters, Carrie Prechtl of Ravenswood and Jacqueline Davis of Rio Grande, Ohio; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Service will be 11 a.m., Monday at Casto Funeral Home Chapel, Ravenswood, W.Va., with the Rev. Lawrence Conger officiating. Burial will following in Ravenswood Cemetery, Ravenswood. Visitation will be one hour prior to time of service at the funeral home.
