Thomas and wife Margaret Rutherford were both natives of Newcastle on Tyne, England. They immigrated to the United States in May 1880 with six of their children, Thomas's brother Jack, his sister Polly, and possibly more of his siblings. The voyage took six weeks and Thomas was seasick the entire voyage, which left Margaret the task of not only caring for him but for the six small children.
Thomas and some of his siblings attempted to raise horses for use in fox hunting in the Pennsylvania and Maryland areas, but failed and all returned to England except Thomas who moved his family to Knoxville, Tennessee. He refused to return to England because of his previous experience with seasickness. He later moved his family to Augusta, Georgia, where he secured employment as a machinist in a steam laundry plant. He was killed in a fall from a tall ladder while attempting to repair a belt on some overhead machinery.
Other children-
Agnes (b 9/3/1873 d 2/24/1889), 16 yrs old,
died of accidental poisoning
Florence Bainbridge Young Van Ormer (b 7/31/1875 d )
