NEWPORT NEWS - Ernest C. Oliver Sr., 86, died Wednesday, July 15, 1998. He was a native of Princeton, NC and had been a Peninsula resident since 1946.
He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding in 1967 after 21 years of service as a welder. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Newport News and was well known as an avid gardener in the Denbigh area.
Mr. Oliver was preceded in death by his first wife, Ethel M. Oliver.
Survivors include his wife, Fannie H. Oliver of Newport News; two daughters, Alma F. McCann, and her husband, Bob, of Hampton, Alice F. McHenry, and her husband, Leo, of Newport News; a stepdaughter, Lois Mericle, and her husband, Carl, of Newport News; a son, E.C. Oliver Jr. of Salisou, Okla.; five stepsons, Philip, David, Daniel, Jacob and Stephen Hartzler; a sister, Lillian Leggett, and her husband, Tommy, of Fairmont, N.C.; and 25 grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Friday, July 17, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home by Dr. Fred King at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 18. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
