One of 8 Philadelphia firefighters who died while fighting the monstrous 11-alarm fire at the Gulf Oil Refinery on Penrose Avenue in South Philadelphia. Fellow firefighter Roger Parker, Jr joined the Fire Department on the same day - January 6, 1969.

August 17, 1975, JOSEPH R. WILEY, husband of Jean Wiley and father of Joseph P. Wiley, Jr.; also survived by his parents, Richard J. and Mary M. (nee O'Brien) Wiley, his sister Mary Ann and brothers James R., Richard J. and Raymond J. Wiley. Relatives, friends and members of the Phila. Fire Department are invited to the Mass of Christian Burial, Friday, 11 AM, Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul. Friends may call at Oliver H. Bair's, 3820 Chestnut st., Thursday eve., 7 to 10 PM. Int. Holy Cross Cem."
