Mr. Benavides died in a tragic automobile accident in August 1993. The Leo Benavides Memorial Award is established in his memory and his honor. The Award will be given annually to a graduating senior at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine.

At the time of his death, Mr. Benavides was the Executive Director of the Tarrant County Medical Society. Mr. Benavides coordinated staff, communications, and programs linking approximately 2,000 physicians and medical students. He created healthcare coalitions that established emergency medical service systems and started a journalistic intern program at the Medical Society.

A native of New York City, Mr. Benavides attended school in San Antonio and graduated from Trinity University. He was a teacher and coach at St. Gerard High School in San Antonio, then Dean of Students and Athletic Director at Antonian High. In 1971, while at Antonian, he was named Texas Baseball Coach of the Year. In the mid-1970's, he moved from administering schools to directing the San Antonio YMCA.

He moved to Fort Worth in 1978 to become Executive Director of the Mental Health Association of Tarrant County. He was a member of the Tarrant county Health Action Project, organized by philanthropic foundations to investigate local healthcare issues and solutions. He had served on the Boards of Because We Care, Inc. Fort Worth challenge, Red Cross of Tarrant County, and the Fort Worth Independent School District vocational Advisory Board. He was a trustee for Tarrant County Youth Collaboration and participated in the United Way Loaned Executive Program.

Mr. Benavides never lost touch with athletics. For the 18 years preceding his death, he officiated at high school football games throughout the region, was a member of the TCU Frog Club, and as a 50-year-old athlete, he golfed in the mid to low-80's and ran a very respectable 13 plus minute two mile.

Dr. Bohn Allen, past President of the Tarrant County Medical Society described Leo as an individual who dedicated most of his waking hours to community service and as an emissary of the medical community.
