Mr. Helms was born in Charlotte and lived in Fort Mill since he was 1 year old. He was the son of Dot Helms and the late Lorane Helms. He attended Fort Mill schools and graduated from Fort Mill High School. Mr. Helms recived an Associates Degree from Spartanburg Junior College and also recived his Bachelors of Arts Degree in Sociology from Winthrop College. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1964 and served in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967 and also in Spain for support of Desert Strom. Mr. Helms joined the North Carolina Air National Guard in 1982 and retired in 2000. He was a life member of Eli Bailes American Legion Post 43, where he was the Service Officer and a member of the Honor Guard. Mr. Helms also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He worked for the Department of Social Services as a Child Protection Worker from 1971 until his retirement in 1997. Mr. Helms was Chairman of the Fort Mill Veterans Park Committee and was active in Boys State.
He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church and the St. John's Men'S Club. Mr. Helms was an avid golfer. He served his Country, he served his family and he served God.

Surviving are his wife, Phillis Murr Helms; daughter, Becky Helms; son David Helms, (Ashley); his mother, Dot Helms; sister Debra Mayes; and two brothers, Larry Helms and Johnny Helms.
