The family left the segregated south, settling in the then-farming community of Farmingdale, NJ. Herman attended Ardena Elementary School and was a star athlete, excelling in athletics such as baseball, football, and swimming at Southern Freehold High School (renamed Howell School Hill in 1968).
Hill threw right-handed, batted left-handed, stood 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 m) tall and weighed 190 pounds (86 kg). Scouted by future major league manager and executive Jack McKeon, he signed with the Minnesota Twins in 1966 and rose through their farm system. Hill was described in March 1969 by Baseball Digest as a "Good prospect. Has hustle, desire, determination. Speedy baserunner and hits with power."
Hill was 23 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 2, 1969, with the Twins. Herman's last game was played on October 1, 1970.
After being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in October 1970, Hill played winter baseball in Venezuela.
It was during his time in Venezuela that he was shot and his body dumped in the ocean off the shores of Valencia, Carabobo, Venezuela.
Herman became missing on December 14, 1970. His body washed ashore five days later, on December 19, 1970. Once identified, his body was sent to New Jersey on December 22, 1970. He was laid to rest on December 26, 1970 in Maplewood Cemetery in Freehold, NJ where his parents and some of his siblings are interred.
