Anthony Dakuras

ROYALTON -- Anthony George "Tony" Dakuras, 86, passed away at 6:40 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2012, in Meriden, Kan., surrounded by his loved ones.

Tony was born Nov. 15, 1925, in Milwaukee, Wis., to George and Stathula (Chachapas) Dakuras.

He married Elsie K. Hartman on Aug. 20, 1948, in Chicago. She preceded him in death March 9, 1998.

He is survived by a daughter, Dianna D. Swords and her husband, Garry Swords, of Meriden, Kan.; two granddaughters, Kathryn Hoppis and Rebecca Dyer; two brothers, James and Peter Dakuras; several nieces and nephews, including, a nephew, Peter (Nancy) Dakuras of Olney and St. Charles, a niece, Connie Loutris, and a great-nephew, Matthew Dakuras.

His parents; seven brothers; and four sisters preceded him in death.

Mr. Dakuras attended Holy Protection of the Virgin Mary Orthodox in Royalton.

He was a World War II Marine Corps Veteran of having participated in action against enemy in Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands and the occupation of China.

He was a member of the Zeigler American Legion, Patrick McClellan Post 177, the Zeigler Eagles Lodge, the West Frankfort, Zeigler, Herrin and Christopher Senior Citizens and a lifetime member of the Marine Corps League. He was a VFW lifetime member and past commander of Post 5214 and an avid bowler, pinochle player, gardener and animal lover.

He retired in 1986 as post master from Mounds and was a member of the National Letter Carriers Union and the National Association of Postmasters of the United States.

Services for Mr. Dakuras will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 25, in Vantrease Funeral Home in Zeigler, with Father Justin Foster officiating. Burial with full military honors accorded at Mounds City National Cemetery in Mound City. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home in Zeigler.
