Ruth Margaret Boyd passed away on June 8, 2012, at Sky Lakes Medical Center in Klamath Falls, Oregon at the age of 103.
Ruth was born on Feb. 24, 1909 in Bieber, California, to James Alfred and Mattie Jack. She had a sister and three brothers. Ruth grew up in Fall River, California, where her father owned a flour mill and made cheese. In 1930, she graduated from Chico State Teachers College and taught school in Gridley, California. It was there that Ruth met Floyd (Toad) Boyd. Although Toad lived in Alturas, she saw him when he clowned at the nearby rodeos. After much convincing from Toad, Ruth finally consented to date him. In 1933, Toad moved to Tulelake, California, where he became the manager of J.T. Negley and Co. (a local implement dealership). On June 12, 1934, Ruth and Toad were married. Ruth joined him and taught school at Tulelake Elementary School. Toad eventually purchased the company, and it became Floyd A. Boyd Co. During their time in Tulelake, Toad and Ruth's three children were born. In 1946, the family moved to Klamath Falls, Oregon Toad purchased additional farm implement dealerships in Fresno, California, where they moved in 1956. During this time, Toad and Ruth traveled extensively. In 1973, Toad sold his dealerships in Fresno, and he and Ruth returned to Klamath Falls to be near their two sons and their families.
Toad and Ruth built a home on Klamath Lake and lived there well into their eighties. When the Crystal Terrace Retirement Community was built, they moved into a cottage and lived there until Toad's death in 2002. At that time Ruth moved into an apartment at Crystal Terrace.
Ruth seemed many years younger than her age and enjoyed many happy years at Crystal Terrace. She attended exercise classes, Bible studies, church services and played bridge at every opportunity. Ruth was an excellent bridge player; she loved to win and typically did. She played bridge the week prior to her death and won handily. Ruth read continually and loved playing the stock market. She read the Wall Street Journal on a regular basis and made many calls to her broker, Dick Ledgerwood, as she worked on her portfolio. Ruth checked the stock market report when she was in the hospital the day before she died. The week before Ruth passed away, she went to see her great-granddaughter's rock band, Fools for Rowan, perform at the Ross Ragland Theater. While most of the family members seated near the stage wore ear plugs to deaden the volume, Ruth refused to turn down her hearing aids. She wanted to hear every note.
Ruth adored her family. She is survived by her three children: Carolyn Shea (John), Don Boyd (Sherrill), and Jim Boyd (Barbara); eight grandchildren: Deanna Lares, John Shea, Nancy Brandsness, Mary Olson, Donnie Boyd, Jimmy Boyd, Jeff Boyd and Jenny Arseneau; and 18 great-grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her siblings, Grace Martin, Orville Jack, Alton Jack and Homer Jack; her husband, Toad, and her grandson, Joe Shea.
Ruth's greatest love was for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Most of the many books she read were about Him. Her strength and her resiliency came from her relationship with God. Ruth knew without a shadow of a doubt that when she left this earth, she would walk into His loving arms. When she was taken to Sky Lakes by ambulance on June 5, the doctor told her that she would need a pacemaker to survive. Ruth's response was: "I don't want that. It is time to move on."
In our church after the benediction we say, "Laugh often and fear not." Ruth laughed often and had no fear of death. She knew where she was going, and she could hardly wait to get there. When Pastor Mike Muehlenhardt of Christ Lutheran Church called on Ruth only a few hours prior to her death, she joined him and her family in singing her favorite hymn, "Amazing Grace". Ruth passed away surrounded by family.
Most of all, we are thankful to our loving Father in Heaven for bringing Ruth Margaret Boyd to this earth to show us how to live for Him.
