Born July 16, 1926, in Burlington, he was the son of Jesse Paul and Gertrude Beckman Abel. On Aug. 30, 1947, he married Betty Jean Freitag at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Burlington.
Mr. Abel was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was vice president of First National Bank of Burlington.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Burlington, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis, Keenagers, St. Francis Advisory Board, Catholic Charities and was treasurer of Fair Board for 35 years.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Kathy Baker of Wheaton, Ill., Maureen Heath of Burlington and Colleen Scholer of Cedar Rapids; two sons, Douglas Abel of Chicago and Kevin Abel of St. Louis; three brothers, Harold C. Abel of Burlington, Francis L. Abel of West Branch and Dr. Raymond T. Abel of Mediapolis; one sister, Loretta M. Stevenson of Burlington; nine grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends following a wake service at 7 p.m. Thursday at Prugh's Chapel until 830 p.m.
The funeral for Mr. Abel will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Gerald Stouvenal officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
