Mustered June 28, 1916 with Company I, 12th Infantry at the rank of Private. Attained rank of Private First Class February 19, 1917. Mustered Out with Company March 10, 1917 New York City. Stationed the previous summer along the Arizona-New Mexico border as part of the Mexican Expedition after being relieved by the 35th Infantry.
Discharged from the New York National Guard August 3, 1917 for the reason being drafted into Federal Service. Attained the rank of Corporal July 2, 1917. Promoted to the rank Sergeant September 9, 1917.
Sent overseas May 17, 1918 aboard the President Grant out of Newport New, Virginia serving with Company M, 108th Infantry, 27th Division.
Most the other officers were either killed or wounded. He was in charge of his platoon on this day and was at the start of his advance, when he was shot in the chest and died almost immediately. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his heroism.
Originally interred in the Guillemont Farms military Cemetery in Bony Aisne, France on October 4, 1918. The following June, he was re-interred in the Somme American Cemetery.
The Oulton-Kraft VFW Post in Weehawken, New Jersey is named in his honor.
