The son of son of Thomas & Elizabeth (Countryman) Gill, in 1850 he was living with his family in North Middleton Township, Cumberland County. He stood 5' 5" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Cumberland County September 15, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 23 as a private with Co. F, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry (162nd Pa). He was hospitalized for illness, during which time he sent home photographs taken in the hospital. Promoted to corporal December 1, 1864, he honorably discharged with his company June 16, 1865, at Cloud Mills, Virginia.

He returned from the army "delicate and sickly and continued to suffer with inflammatory rheumatism." He married Elizabeth Lesher (Low also reported) May 26, 1868 and fathered Thomas Peter (b. 10/24/68). The widowed Elizabeth married a Lesher in 1872.
