The son of Joseph & Mary Green and stepson of Jane Green, in 1860 he was a cooper's apprentice (to his father) living in Middlesex Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes. He married Frances "Fannie" lnu. and fathered Emma (b. @1860), Sallie E. (b. @1868), Samuel A. (b. @1869), and Anne C. (b. @1873).

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Carlisle September 15, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 23 as a corporal with Co. F, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry (162nd Pa). Broken to ranks March 9, 1863, he was promoted to sergeant February 11, 1864, again to 1st sergeant September 1, 1864, and finally to 2nd lieutenant March 10, 1865, although he never mustered at the latter rank. He was wounded near Farmville, Virginia, and not officially mustered out until March 29, 1867, to date June 16, 1865.

He died from pneumonia at his home.
