Charles Augustus Rowan was born George Hardin Boruff to Joseph and Lucy (Gibbs) Boruff. When he was still very young and his mother went to the hospital to have his sister, Jennie, George went to stay with the Rowan family. He remained with them after his mother's death, days after Jennie's birth, and grew up a Rowan. According to his great-granddaughter via FamilySearch.org, Charles didn't know about the Boruffs until he was 62. His obituary just a few years later gives his name as George Boruff.

WALLACE, Idaho, Dec. 26.—George Boruff, 71, father of Joe Rowan, Wallace, died in a hospital here following an extended illness. Other survivors are another son, M/Sgt. John Rowan with the army in Japan, and a sister, Mrs. Fern Proffer, Alton, Ill.
