Harriet Messer, 92, of Cheyenne died Feb. 16 in Cheyenne.
She was born Nov. 28, 1919, in Glidden, Iowa, the daughter of Dr. Guy J. Fansher and Ella Russell Fansher. She was a 1937 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School in Iowa, and graduated with a degree in home economics from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1941.
Upon college graduation, she taught school for one year in Thompson, Iowa. On June 6, 1942, in Red Oak, Iowa, she married Howard Messer, a college classmate. They settled first in Mount Pleasant.
After the war, Howard and Harriet lived in Mount Pleasant, and then moved to Missouri, where they resided in Hermann, Washington and St. Louis. In 1956, the family moved to Beloit, Wis. In Beloit, Harriet spent one year as a copywriter for a local radio station and a semester teaching chemistry at a Catholic High School. She then returned to public education as a home economics and English teacher.
Concurrent with her teaching career, she earned a master's degree in school counseling from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. She was later awarded a life certification in school counseling from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. She worked as a school counselor at a junior high school in Beloit, Wis., until 1982 when she and Howard retired in Fort Collins, Colo. In 1995, they moved to Cheyenne.
Harriet was an active member of the United Methodist Church in all the communities she called home. She was a member of PEO in Fort Collins and of PEO Chapter S in Cheyenne. She enjoyed writing and was an accomplished and published poet. Her custom-made draperies decorated her home and the homes of family members throughout her lifetime.
Harriet is survived by her 3 children and her sister Francis Z____ of Bloomington, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her husband Howard Messer; her parents, Guy Fansher, Ella Russell Fansher and Lucille Snyder Fansher; her brother, Guy Russell Fansher; and sisters, Ruth Fansher, Evelyn Bredensteiner and Marilyn Pickens.
Cremation has taken place at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens under the direction of Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel.
Services at the First United Methodist Church of Cheyenne will be scheduled in the spring.
