Funeral services for Horace A. "Pete" Gibbs, 86, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, 2011, at the First Wyoming United Presbyterian Church with the rev. Curtis Hill officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Valley View Cemetery.

Pete died Sept. 3, 2011, at the Cheyenne VA Nursing Home. Memorials may be made to either the Yoder or Hawk Springs, Wyoming Rescue Units. Visitations will be Thursday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home and the casket will be open briefly prior to the services at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Colyer Funeral Home and friends may send condolences to the family at www.colyerfuneralhome.com.

Pete was born Oct. 12, 1924, at his grandparents' homestead southeast of Yoder, the son of Lowell and Marie (VerStraten) Gibbs. He grew up and attended first to seventh grades at the Woodard School five miles south and two miles west of Yoder and the Hertzler School five miles south and a mile-and-a-half west of Yoder. He attended eighth to 11th grades in Yoder. He was drafted into the Army in 1944 where he served as a combat engineer guarding the mail trucks in Cairo, Egypt. He was discharged in 1946. He then graduated high school in May of 1946. He started farming his family's home place at age 14 with his uncle, Jim VerStraten. He took care of his mother and six brothers and sisters. Pete married Beverly Pomeroy on May 20, 1956, at the First Baptist Church in Torrington. He worked for others, mainly Bill Likins, at Goshen Irrigation District from 1957 until 1972. The moved back to the home place in 1970 and he started working for the Horse Creek Conservation District in 1972. Pete then went to work in the mill at Shirley Basin for the Getty Oil Co. as an oiler and maintenance man. He worked there from 1979 until 1985. He raised sheep and cattle all the time on the farm. Pete enjoyed old machinery, playing Dominoes and enjoyed the view to the south from his window in his home.

Pete is survived by wife, Beverly, of Yoder; two sons, Harvey Gibbs of Yoder, and Keith Gibbs and his wife Cindy of Lingle; three sisters, Mae Garrelts of Torrington, Helen Soule of Gering, Neb., and Elizabeth Vance and her husband Dwight of Mitchell, Neb; two brothers, Jack Gibbs and his wife Shirley of Cheyenne and Bud Gibbs and his wife, Eula, of Davenport, Iowa; five grandchildren, Kacey Gibbs and his wife, Bobbijo of Douglas, Shane Gibbs of Billings, Montana, Amy Gibbs, Hannah Gibbs, and Heather Gibbs, all of Lingle; two great-grandchildren, Haylee and Kylie Gibbs of Douglas; and his Boston Terrier, Oreo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Robert Hoot Gibbs, and a son, Randy Wayne Gibbs, in 1982.
