James J. Harter I, 88, of Belleville, IL, born January 13, 1918, in Collinsville, IL, died Sunday, October 22, 2006, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, MO.

Mr. Harter was a retired professional truck driver, who drove for both Swift & Company and Arkansas Best Freight. He was a member of Teamsters Local 600, St. Louis, MO. Mr. Harter was a 58-year member of St. Mary?s Catholic Church, Belleville, IL. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran.

James loved gardening and never met a stranger. His and Cecilia?s greatest pride and joy were their children, their grandchildren, and their great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Cecilia A., nee Joseph, Harter, whom he married June 20, 1940, and who died August 6, 2005; his parents, Lawrence B. and Grace, nee Veach, Harter; the aunt and uncle who raised him, Laura and Wilford Sherwood; his stepmother, Norma Harter; and a stepbrother, Stanley Kimes.

He is survived by four sons:

William (Janet) Harter of Belleville, IL,

Robert (Mary Beth) Harter of Charlotte, NC,

and Mark (Elaine) Harter of Belleville, IL;

nine grandchildren:

James III (Susan) Harter of Cranston, RI,

Jeffrey Harter of Smithton, IL,

Jennifer (Dr. Alex) Schillinger of O'Fallon, IL,

Scott Harter of Cahokia, IL,

Tim (Lisa) Harter of Collinsville, IL,

Sarah Harter and Ben Harter, both of Charlotte, NC,

Nathan (Sarah) Harter of Gaithersburg, MD,

and Matthew Harter of Belleville, IL;

four great-grandchildren:

Alexis Schillinger,

Brienne Harter,

Madelyn Schillinger,

and Joseph Hartis-Harter.

Funeral procession will leave at 9:40 a.m. Friday, October 27, 2006, from George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, IL, for a 10 .am. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary?s Catholic Church, Belleville, IL, with the Rev. Stanley Konieczny officiating.


Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Shiloh, IL.
