in 1852, Henry Houdyshell and family and
Samuel Howdyshell and family left Ohio to become pioneers in Tama County, Iowa.
They settled in Howard township.Sam Howdyshell, after spending one year here returned to Ohio, but Henry stayed in Tama County.
The family records show that the family comes from Adam Howdyshell who left Virginia in 1824 and moved to Ohio. Those pioneers braved the trip over the mountains to
the cumberland road, Their aim was to do or die to get to the Ohio country, which in those days was talked about as mostly level land of marvelous fertility. So many of them wanted to leave the Atlantic coast that on the narrow Cumberland road over the moutains there were lines of horses
and covered wagons as far as the eye could see.

Bottom of Henry Houdyshell's momument:
Loving Friends weep not for me. I long to be at rest. How happy, happy I shall be When pillowed on my Savior's breast. The hope, the hope is sweet that we soon in heaven may meet. There we shall happy be. Rest from pain and sorrow free.
