Death’s Doing.
Simon P. Garner, died at his old home near Hazelton on Friday, Dec. 18, 1903, in the 79th year of his age. His remains were interred in the Willett graveyard near Brandonville, on Saturday at two o’clock. He was the last of the large family born to William and Frances Roberts Garner, and was born near Kingwood, May 4, 1825. In 1848 he was married to Rebecca W. Smith, who preceded him to the grave about 7 years ago
In the latter part of the 18th century Lewis Garner, with his wife and children came from Loudon [sic] county, Va., and settled in Ryan’s Glade, in what is now Garrett county Md., where he died a few years afterward. Later his widow moved to the Crab Orchard, in what is now Preston county, where she afterward married Amos Roberts, an old Revolutionary soldier and pensioner. Her children by Lewis Garner were John, Lewis, William, Malinda, Hulda and Phoebe. William Garner married Frances Roberts, and they reared a family of twelve children: Elizabeth, married Henry L Parks, and was the mother of Cashier James W. Parks, and died July 31, 1854. Burgess, married Mary Watson, and died about 1843; Johanna married John McGinnis, and died in 1880; Alfred, married Mary Smith and has been dead several years; Samuel married Rebecca Ridenour, and died August 18, 1900, in his 81st year; Amos, died unmarried in 1864, aged 42 years; Huldah, married Amaziah Payne, and died in 1851; Margery, died unmarried at the age of twenty three; William R. married Nancy Ridenour, and died some ten years ago; Simon P. subject of this sketch; Julia married Daniel Feather, and died about 1885 and John, who studied for the ministery [sic] of the M. E. church, was admitted to the W. Va., conference about 1854 was transferred to the Minnesota conference in 1857, and after preaching in that state and Missouri for several years, removed to Dennison, Texas, where he died in September, 1886.
