Herman was 5' 9" tall, very dark skinned and of muscular built with wide shoulders. I remember fondly his abilities with a saw and a hammer. He was an excellent carpenter and never avoided constructing what-ever a patron wanted. One of his sayings, which he embedded in my mind was "Take pride in all you do and you'll never have to be ashamed to put your name on your work." He was a man dedicated to his brothers and sisters, loved his parents and spoke fondly of them often. When his brother, Slim (Elbert Vernon), became ill with TB, he moved his 2nd wife and family to Arizona to care for him in the dryer climate and only returned East when all efforts had failed so Slim could die at home. During the years following WW II, he made a living working as a carpenter, logger, a fireman, and in the tire recapping and vulcanizing business. He had several nicknames; Shorty, Itchy and Scratchy.
