William was born in Ziefen, Switzerland to Johan Jacob Koch and Anna Buser. He was one of three brothers (William, Jacob, and Samuel) to immigrate to the USA (date and port unknown - although we believe he came with Jacob around 1867 and Samuel came over around 1875). All three of the brothers ended up in Toledo, Ohio very quickly and that is where William met his wife Sophia. He worked as a carpenter in 1880 but later became a farmer, probably on his brother Jacob's farm. He had several children, all but one (his first son Theodore Earnest Koch) are buried around him.
