He graduated from Memorial High School and received a Degree in Chemical Engineering from Notre Dame. He married the late Dorothy Grimler on November 24th 1951 and although they moved extensively they always called Evansville their home.

Joe began working for Esso in Baton Rouge, LA in 1955. He eventually oversaw the design and construction and then managed a new polyethylene plant in Baton Rouge, which would become a model for future Exxon Chemical plants and the proudest professional achievement of his career. He continued with Exxon and held several positions before becoming Global Vice President of Exxon Plastics.

He retired in 1986 to spend more time with his wife who had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. They enjoyed traveling and saw much of the world until Dorothy's Parkinson's symptoms became too severe.
