Augusta Jean Atkisson Denison, 90, of Opelika, Ala., died Thursday, June 28, 2012, at her home in Opelika, Ala.

Born January 8, 1922, in Cushman, Ark., she was the daughter of Carl Atkisson and Margie Collie Atkisson. After moving to Batesville, the family lived at times both in East Batesville and West Batesville. Augusta was a 1940 graduate of Batesville High School. She met her future husband, Bob Denison, as she was walking with a friend across the Bayou Bridge. He offered them a ride and, after a time, Bob and Augusta were married at Bald Knob, Ark, in 1941.

She was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and an indispensible helpmate in their family businesses in Chicago, Ill. and Birmingham, Ala. She volunteered as a Guardian Ad Litem for children in Florida, taught both children and adult Sunday school classes and was a dedicated spiritual advisor and prayer warrior for her family and her community. She committed to Jesus Christ at West Batesville Baptist Church in Batesville Ark. and she ended her life as a member of Lakeview Baptist Church in Auburn, Ala.

Survivors include a daughter, Kay Williams of Yukon, Okla.; a son, Joseph Denison of Opelika, Ala.; two sisters, Claudia Hedden and Ella Smith, both of Batesville, Ark.; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and two sisters.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 5, in the Roller-Crouch Chapel with The Rev. George Williams officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery under the direction of Roller-Crouch Funeral Home of Batesville.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to service time Thursday at Roller-Crouch.
