Son of John Henry Vaal and Margaret Plageman, husband of Vivian Vaal.
1st Lieutenant Harry G. "Bud" Vaal enlisted at Patterson Field (now Wright-Patterson AFB) in Dayton, Ohio on 10 Sep 1942. He served as a bombardier for the 748th Bomb Squadron, 457th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force during World War II.
Lt. Vaal and three fellow aircrew members were killed when the number two engine of B-17G S/N 44-8152 "Miss Ida" caught fire on takeoff and the aircraft exploded.
Originally interred at an American military cemetery in Europe, Lt. Vaal was brought home and reinterred at Saint Stephen Cemetery on July 20, 1948 (memorial #120454400).
