He was born in Hammond, Ind., and was the son of the late Ezra and Martha Kemp Abel.
The Rev. Abel was a graduate of Columbia Bible College and pastored churches through out South Carolina. His last pastorate was Hurricane Baptist Church. He served on the Board of Trustees at Anderson College, and was the Director of Missions for the Reedy River Baptist Association. He was also a Korean War U.S. Navy veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Audrey Perry Abel of the home; four sons, David Abel, Mark Abel, Daniel Abel and Timothy Abel; two daughters, Joy Holloway and Marilee White; two brothers, Ronald Abel and Terry Abel; four sisters, June Gebauer, Juanita Brown, Judy Simons and Sue Pulley; and fourteen grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Jonathan Abel; a grandson, Jonathan White; and a brother, Robert Abel.
A private graveside service will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Hurricane Baptist Church Cemetery.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday in the Hurricane Baptist Church in Clinton.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the Richard E. Abel Family Life Center at Hurricane Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, c/o Hurricane Baptist Church, 2763 Hurricane Church Road, Clinton, SC 29325.
