Robert L. Wynkoop, 78, of Las Vegas, died Aug. 5, 2004 of metastasized lung cancer. He was a man who believed in "doing it" his way and had little concern about the truth, what others said or thought. Robert, as well as his father and grandfather, were Free Masons, members of the Scottish Rite and Shriners. In his early years, he was a civilian plumbing, heating and air conditioning contractor as well as being a master plumber in the Sea Bee Naval Reserves since WWII. At age 16, Robert lied about his age and joined the Marines seeing combat at Guadalcanal. After discharge, he suffered from bouts of PTSD (which would cause him to be a future domestic violence abuser to his 1st family) and Malaria but sickness did not keep him from marrying his first wife Estelle. The couple settled in the suburbs of Los Angeles and had three children. That marriage continued until 1974. Robert continued to be involved in civic activities as well as Naval Sea Bee Reserves. He volunteered for activated for the Korean conflict (1950) and was stationed in Guam. In 1968, he volunteered for activation to Vietnam. Starting Aug 1968-1970, Bob served a two-year tour in Viet Nam. It is unclear whether Robert actually remarried in Viet Nam or if he maintained a common law marriage with Chinh Trinh (aka Cindy) once he moved to Hawaii about and after Chinh gained admittance to America. What we know is if he was married in Viet Nam to bring Chinh Tran to the US, he continued to be married 6 more years to his first wife until 1974. A marriage license for Robert and Chinh Tran has yet to be found. There were no children from the second relationship although he and Chinh Tran raised the two Vietnamese children of his wife's sister and later her grandchildren. When he and Chinh moved to America, Robert gave the two Vietnamese children the same names of his younger American children, causing numerous identity problems that have continued throughout the years. Service was held at 9:20 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery with burial following.
