Samuel died during the civil war, not sure where he is buried. He was with the 63rd Reg't E.M.M.

The family story goes like this Samuel and his Missourians were sent to battle against confederate troops in Arkansas. There was much illness amongst the E.M.M. soldiers probably because of not being supplied by the Federal government. Samuel was among those who became ill and was sent home to recover. Samuel didn't make it home may have died in or near Little Rock.

The Enrolled Missouri Militias was a state established Militia of citizen soldiers, not federal. They were not paid by the Federal Government, neither were they supplied with rations and frequently they had no weapons other than what they supplied themselves. Because of this lack of Government support, few reports were filed, so few records are available. The EMM were established by locality and were used within the state for it's defense. Some were men who had fought on the side of the Union, but were afraid to re-enlist because of the constant threat to their families and land by southern guerillas. Some refused to fight the Confederacy, but would fight against the guerillas. They were to be used within the state of Missouri for the protection of Federal property. However, in some cases they were required to fight actual battles against the Confederacy, something they were not trained for, nor were they equipped to do.
