Death of Dr. S. M. Bartlett

Dr. Stephen Madison Bartlett died this morning at his residence, No. 536 20th Street. He had been in poor health for about a year and three weeks since had an attack of paralysis, which terminated fatally. Dr. Bartlett was a grandson of Josiah Bartlett of Kingston, NJ, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, who was also the first Governor of New Hampshire. He was born June 22, 1817 at Haverhill, NH. The signer himself, all of his sons and most of his grandsons were physicians, and Dr Bartlett entering the same profession studied medicine at Dartmouth College, graduating in 1837. In 1839, he went south on account of his health, and after practicing for a time was nearly twenty years professor in a female college at Tuskegee, AL. In 1871 he was appointed in the office of the second auditor, where he had since remained. He married Susan A. Hendree of Richmond, VA, a sister of the wife of the ex-Senator, Thomas Norwood, of Georgia. She died in 1879. Dr. Bartlett leaves one son and two daughters. He was a gentleman of high character and a member of the NY Ave. Presbyterian Church.
